Haptic design of vehicle interiors at AUDI

Werner Tietz

AUDI attaches great importance to the haptic design of its vehicles. Haptic design represents an essential factor in meeting the high expectations of AUDI customers. A team has been set up to assess the haptic impressions created by vehicle interiors. The team includes representatives from technical divisions who form the interface with the development departments concerned. The remainder of the team is composed of members drawn from all areas of the company who, quite deliberately, have no direct link with the technical environment concerned. By means of their own assessments and using representative customer surveys, this team produces findings that give a broad and objective reflection of how the vehicle haptics are perceived by users.
The technical departments concerned have the task of implementing the conclusions of these assessments in design and engineering, principally in surface contours and ‘haptic’ material characteristics. This is done by the development of measuring and testing processes, the use of special materials, such as coating the air vent operating wheels with a rubber-like anti-slip material, the design of components and materials, and the positioning of components on the basis of own and surveyed experiences. Three examples of areas of vehicle interior development in which these methods are applied are described below.
